Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin (Oh-COIN) has been relieved of his duties as the 7th Fleet Commander for the U.S. Navy. The move comes after the USS John S. McCain was rammed by a Liberian-flagged supertanker in the Straits of Malacca. At least 10 soldiers are presumed dead. This is the fourth accident in the Seventh Fleet in less than a year. Aucoin was set to retire in September. He was immediately replaced by Rear Admiral Phillip Sawyer, whose appointment to lead the South Pacific area fleet was already announced in May in anticipation of Aucoin’s retirement.
