China tank deal opens old wounds for wary
Stab wounds found on torso of journalist who died after trip on Danish inventor’s submarine.
Fifteen stabs wounds were found on the headless and dismembered torso of a Swedish journalist last seen with a Danish inventor in his home-made submarine, a prosecutor said Tuesday. Police also found videos on the man’s computer showing women being tortured and murdered.
Prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen said at a pre-trial hearing that the cause of death for 30-year-old Kim Wall has not yet been established.
Inventor Peter Madsen, 46, is being held on preliminary charges of manslaughter and indecent handling of a corpse. Madsen says Wall died after being accidentally hit by a 70-kilogram hatch in the submarine’s tower and he buried her at sea.
Swedish journalist who died on submarine had 15 wounds
A Danish inventor charged with murdering Swedish journalist Kim Wall in his home-made submarine had video footage on his computer showing women being violently killed, a court heard on Tuesday.
A police prosecutor said officers found images ‘which we presume to be real’ of women being strangled and decapitated on the hard drive on Peter Madsen’s computer in a laboratory he ran.
That, together with new post-mortem evidence showing Wall was stabbed 15 times in her ribcage and genitals ‘around or shortly after her death,’ was adding to the case against Madsen, the prosecutor, Jakob Buch-Jepsen, told the Copenhagen court.
DNA tests from Madsen’s nails, face and neck showed a clear match with Wall’s, Buch-Jepsen said, though the exact cause of death remained unknown.
‘Our suspicion hasn’t changed, it has been strengthened since (the last hearing on) September 5,’ he added.
Madsen, who denies murdering Wall and another charge of mutilating her body, appeared in court via video link dressed in a green boilersuit.
He said the computer searched by police was not his.
‘They are the space laboratory’s tools which have been used by everyone in the laboratory,’ he said.
The court heard he had been working on building a space rocket in the lab.
He remained calm during the pre-trial session, sitting with his hands folded most of the time. The court ordered him detained for another four months as investigations continued.
Wall, a 30-year-old freelance journalist who was researching a story on Madsen, went missing after he took her out to sea in the 17-metre (56-foot) craft in August
Madsen has told the court in past hearings Wall died accidentally, saying she was hit by a heavy hatch cover on his UC3 Nautilus submarine.
On August 23, police identified a headless female torso washed ashore in Copenhagen as Wall’s.
Madsen has also denied amputating her limbs, saying he tried to bury her whole body at sea.
The trial continues.

Russian strike wounds US-backed Syria fighters: coalition
Russian forces bombed US-backed fighters in Syria’s eastern province of Deir Ezzor early Saturday, the US-led coalition said after Moscow denied the claim.
“At approximately 12:30 am GMT (3:30 am local time) September 16, Russian forces struck a target east of the Euphrates River in Syria near Deir Ezzor, causing injuries to coalition partner forces,” the coalition said in a statement.
“Russian munitions impacted a location known to the Russians to contain Syrian Democratic Forces and coalition advisors. Several SDF fighters were wounded and received medical care as a result of the strike.”
The statement added that no coalition troops were wounded.
Russia’s military spokesman earlier denied targeting the SDF, an alliance of Arab and Kurdish fighters supported by Washington.
“This is not possible. Why would we bomb them?” military spokesman Igor Konashenkov told AFP at the Hmeimim base, Moscow’s main outpost for its air operations in Syria.
The SDF and Russian-backed Syrian government forces are conducting parallel but separate offensives against IS in the strategic and oil-rich eastern province of Deir Ezzor.
For the most part, the two sides have avoided running into each other, largely thanks to a special “deconfliction” hotline used to communicate about where operations are taking place.
“Coalition officials are available and the deconfliction line with Russia is open 24 hours per day,” coalition commander Lieutenant General Paul Funk said.
“We put our full efforts into preventing unnecessary escalation among forces that share ISIS as our common enemy.” AFP / SAMAA

A Syrian military air strike killed and wounded dozens of people after it hit an olive oil press factory close to the northern city of Idlib on Tuesday, activists said. According to Reuters, activist Tareq Abdelhaq reported that at least 20 people were killed and 50 were injured in the attack on the Abu Hilal olive oil press, located 2km west of Idlib city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights could only confirm five deaths. Activists said the victims were civilians and that it was unclear if any rebel target was in the vicinity, but acknowledged there were opposition soldiers in the area.
They said a Syrian jet fired two barrel bombs that hit the olive press, and that opposition fighters gave medical treatment and helped to evacuate victims. Activist reports are tough to verify as the Syrian government restricts access to foreign news outlets.
