F/A-18 Super Hornet: Multi-role Advanced Fighter for Navy and IAF?

Future Growth Potential

The Super Hornet will be on the Navy’s carrier decks well into the 2040s – being three-fourths of the Navy’s strike fighter capacity into the 2030’s and no less than half the carriers striking force into the 2040’s. The next generation of Super Hornet aircraft comes into the US Navy and potentially international customers to fulfill its role as the next-gen airplane in a complementary way with the F-35. Those two airplanes are going to work together on the carrier decks for the US. Navy, well into the 2040s.

THE F-35 C VS THE F/A-18 ADVANCED SUPER HORNET AND THE FUTURE OF CARRIER AIRCRAFT || WARTHOG #TOG
But for the military at large, the stakes seem much higher. Hundreds of billions of dollars and 16 years of time have gone into the F-35 program, which was intended to provide planes for the Air Force, Marines, and the Navy. As of today, only the Marine and Air Force variants have been declared initially capable.

Meanwhile, the F-35C, the least numerous and most expensive variant of the family, has seen yet another major setback. A Pentagon report, made public by Inside Defense, stated that rough carrier launches physically hurt pilots and disoriented them during the crucial moments when they take off.

US Navy’s Most Accurate Warship Killer, JSOW C-1, Operational on F/A-18 Fighters

US Navy’s Most Accurate Warship Killer, JSOW C-1, Operational on F/A-18 Fighters

The U.S. Navy has completed arming its McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets aboard its fleet of Nimitz-class aircraft carriers with the new Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) C-1, the navy’s first air-to-ground “network-enabled” weapon that can identify and sink fast moving enemy warships.

The precision-guided JSOW C-1 uses GPS technology; inertial measurement unit guidance technology and an imaging infrared seeker in the final phase of flight to find and attack enemy warships.

The JSOW C-1 Moving Maritime Target capability allows the missile to fly to an updated cue from its controlling platform and later transition to an image recognition/matching process enabled by an onboard database of ship characteristics stored in the weapon.

JSOW C-1 achieved operational status in June 2016 and is now deployed with all the navy’s Carrier Air Wings (CVWs).

U.S. Navy Plans To Use Stealth F-35s And F/A-18 Super Hornets For Cruise M!ssile Defense

This video shows you that U.S. Navy Plans To Use Stealth F-35s And F/A-18 Super Hornets For Cruise M!ssile Defense.

The Navy plans to expand its emerging “over-the-horizon” ship-launched cruise missile defense technology to a wider range of airborne sensor platforms beyond an E2-D Hawkeye and Marine Corps F-35B – to possibly include the Navy’s own carrier-launched stealthy F-35C and F/A-18 Super Hornets, service officials said.

Citing comments from the Navy’s Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems manager for future combat systems, a report from The U.S. Naval Institute news detailed some Navy plans to further modernize a fire-control system known as Naval Integrated Fire Control – Counter Air, or NIFC-CA.

The Navy is already building, deploying and testing a fleet of upgraded DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers with NIFC-CA – as a way to bring an ability to detect and destroy incoming enemy anti-ship cruise missiles at farther ranges from beyond the horizon.

The technology enables ship-based radar to connect with an airborne sensor platform to detect approaching enemy anti-ship cruise missiles from beyond the horizon and, if needed, launch an SM-6 missile to intercept and destroy the incoming threat, Navy officials said.

NIFC-CA has previously operated using an E2-D Hawkeye surveillance plane as an aerial sensor node; it has also been successfully tested from a land-based “desert ship” at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. from an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Should the Navy’s future plans materialize, the system would expand further to include the F/A-18 and F-35C.

NIFC-CA gives Navy ships the ability to extend the range of an interceptor missile and extend the reach sensors by netting different sensors of different platforms — both sea-based and air-based together into one fire control system, Navy officials told Scout Warrior in a previous interview.

NIFC-CA was previously deployed on a Navy cruiser serving as part of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group in the Arabian Gulf.

WE SEE YOU : BOEING Says F/A-18 Super Hornets can Detect STEALTH AIRCRAFTS with Anti-Stealth Tech

We See You: Boeing Says Future Super Hornets Will Have Anti-Stealth Tech

Officials at defense manufacturer Boeing say that future variations of the US Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft could feature anti-stealth technology, which would allow them to track the heat signatures of stealth aircraft.

Dan Gillian, who manages Boeing’s EA-18 and F/A-18 programs, told reporters at the Navy League’s Sea-Air-Space conference “It’s a long-range, air-to-air counter-stealth sensor … Talk about complementary capabilities – that’s something that Super Hornet brings to the carrier that nobody else has,” DOD Buzz reports.

At the conference, held in National Harbor, Maryland, Gillian said that Block III upgrades, which include better tracking and more network integration capabilities, plus increased production and a “service life modification” maintenance program for the existing fleet will help keep the multirole fighter flying for the next few decades.

Supplemental heat tracking would be included in the Block III upgrades, and Aviation International News quoted Gillian saying, “I think a huge and significant change from the 2013 Advanced Super Hornet to the 2016-2017 Block III Super Hornet is the need for the Super Hornet to be a ‘smart node’ on the Navy’s NIFC-CA [Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air] network.”

“In the past we’ve talked about Super Hornet maybe could be just a dumb shooter with information passed to it … But with all the information available, with fusion, being [a contributor] to the network is really important,” he added.

The maintenance program would seek to increase the craft’s life from 6,000 hours to 9,000 through sustainment and engineering upgrades.

Operations against Daesh along with F-35 program delays have taken their toll on the current fleet. “Super Hornets have been flying hard and doing a lot of the country’s work, putting a lot of hours on the airplane that weren’t planned to be burned up,” Gillian said.

He noted that corrosion becomes a problem with aircraft that sit idle for long periods of time, so the service was conducting assessments to determine how frequently maintenance has to take place and to what extent.

Two Hornets per months are already being built by Boeing in St.Louis and Gillian said production could increase if foreign governments or the US Navy buy more of the fourth-generation aircraft.

Congress hasn’t voted on a funding request for 24 F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters for the 2017 fiscal year.

According to the Navy League the service had had 545 F/A-18E/F aircraft as of 2015, with plans to buy a total of 563. The Navy also plans to buy a total of 1153 EA-18G Growlers as well, as there were 114 of the aircraft as of 2015.

In November, the Canadian government dealt a blow to the F-35 program by negotiating to buy 18 Super Hornets. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party said at the time that the country urgently needs “a new squadron of interim aircraft” for its 30-year-old fleet of CF-18s.

Before this move, the F-35 was considered the most likely aircraft to replenish the Canadian fleet.
