STORYLINE:
Smoke rose into the sky after suspected NATO airstrike on Moammar Gadhafi””s hometown of Sirte on Thursday.
Civilians are fleeing the besieged town after a day of heavy bombardment and shelling on Wednesday.
On Tuesday Britain””s Ministry of Defence said Royal Air Force and NATO aircraft “were very active” over Sirte.
The alliance usually only gives details about strikes the next day.
Revolutionary fighters have so far been unable to defeat regime forces from Sirte, which is located on the Mediterranean coast.
Fighting in Libya continues on three fronts – Gadhafi””s hometown of Sirte, Bani Walid and the southern city of Sabha.
