Hopes were dashed in the search for the Argentine submarine missing in the South Atlantic,… after Argentina’s navy said sounds detected during the search did not come from the vessel.
Park Ji-won has more.
Brief hope is followed by disappointment,… as sounds detected from about 200 meters under the sea,…. during search operations for a missing Argentine submarine were found to not come from the missing vessel.
Argentine authorities announced the result of their analysis on Monday evening.
“These signals, or noises, were brought to the operations center where they were analyzed with specialized computer programs to determine and confirm whether these signals were from the submarine and in the end they responded to us that this message did not come from the submarine.”
This follows another disappointment earlier on Monday when satellite calls detected over the weekend were confirmed to not be from the missing submarine.
The U.S., U.K, Chile and Brazil have sent their vessels and aircraft to help search for the missing submarine.
The submarine had reported an electrical malfunction,… before losing contact with authorities last Wednesday,… in the South Atlantic,… some 430 kilometers off the Argentine coast.
The submarine was carrying 44 crew members,… and was travelling to the coastal city of Mar del Plata.
Grief counselors,… five psychologists and a psychiatrist,… are lending their support to the families of the crew members.
