첫 여군 전차조종수 탄생…임현진 하사 “롤모델 될 것”
It seems like the South Korean Army is going to have more female sergeants in its ranks in the future.
For the first time in the nation’s history, a young woman in the armed forces is piloting a tank.
Our Kim Mok-yeon has her story.
The Republic of Korea Army on Tuesday revealed the story of the country’s first female tank pilot.
24-year-old sergeant Im Hyeon-jin was first introduced to the public during five days of cold weather training by the Hanshin battalion which kicked off on Monday.
Im became the first female soldier to drive the tank, which is considered one of the Korean Army’s core weapons systems.
Im has been driving tanks since September of 2016.
She now drives one of the main battle tanks, the K1A2, which is considered one of the toughest jobs in the Army.
And as of today, she has accumulated a total of some 2,000 kilometers in the tank.
Im initially worked as a tank gunner when she was transferred to the capital mechanized infantry division in 2015, just a year after the Korean army made the historic decision to eliminate gender preferences in all branches of the service.
Im says that with her title, she feels a big sense of duty and responsibility.
“My ultimate goal is to be an outstanding tank commander. I’ve been working in the division for two years now, and I feel like I can carry out the job. I will also try to become a good role model for future women soldiers.”
With Im Hyun-jin’s achievements providing the momentum, the Korean army is looking forward to fostering more soldiers like her in the near future.
