India soon to sign to purchase of Two frigates of 11356 project from Russia.
Presidential aide for military-technical cooperation Vladimir Kozhin said today that Russia and India will sign soon the contracts on supply of project 11356 frigates, for the Indian Navy. “As far as these frigates and their delivery are concerned, we hope that all final contracts will be signed by the end of this year. Under the terms of the contract we are to build the frigates. India is to purchase the power plants on its own,” Kozhin said in an exclusive interview to Tass news agency.

Abe-Modi bromance may not overcome hurdles to Soryu submarine sale to India.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe holds his 10th summit with India’s leader Narendra Modi on Thursday (Sept 14), underscoring the importance of strategic ties between the countries as the two face an increasingly assertive China. Supplying submarine technology would lock Japan and India into an even tighter defence relationship for years to come. Despite the close relationship between the two right-leaning nationalist leaders, Japan is hesitant to plunge into negotiations on submarine exports. A bid to supply Australia with an adapted version of its Soryu subs failed last year, despite the deepening security ties between the two nations

US to push F-16 jets during Defence Secretary’s visit this month.
The US is expected to once again urge India to buy F-16 fighter planes during the visit of the US Secretary of Defence James Mattis this month-end. During the visit, both sides are expected to boost defence ties, with India vowing to sign the remaining two foundational defence pacts. Mattis’ visit to India, from September 25- 26, comes at a time when there is renewed pressure from the Trump administration to bolster defence trade under the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) by procuring more weaponry from America.

Hyundai-HSL to build first of five Fleet Support Ships.
The strategic partnership to be finalised between leading shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd of South Korea and Hindustan Shipyard Limited, the Visakhapatnam-based Ministry of Defence Undertaking, will see construction of Fleet Support Ships for the Indian Navy in both the countries. The agreement is expected to be inked in mid-2018. Talks are in progress between the MoD and its counterpart in South Korea.

India and Russia have begun discussions to work out the modalities for their first tri-service military exercise to be held in October. It will also be India’s first bilateral military exercise with any country involving all three services. “The Indra exercise is scheduled from October 19 to 29. The Final Planning Conference (FPC) will be held from September 12 to 15 in Russia. All logistical issues and modalities will be finalised here,” an Army source told The Hindu.
