Have a great weekend. If you missed, I hope you'll check out my interview with former Evergreen professor Bret Weinstein from earlier this week. It was great to host Bret, and he had a lot to say about what exactly is going on at that crazy school. The interview is here: https://youtu.be/np9yc7hp0vc Cheers.

Timing is important to having a proper discussion. But the timing for discussing a mass shooting isn't while the Emergency Room is fighting for the victim's lives. The proper timing for gun control discussion is after a proper investigation has occurred in regards to said shooting. If you don't know what went wrong, how can you properly address the situation?

Personally, I've never had anything about discussing things after an event.

However, at the same time, I do not believe that we should legislate until emotions have cooled and there is time to rationally think things through.

You are assuming the narrative for the shooting is what happened. At this point it think you would have to be quite gullible to believe the story they are pushing. Where is Jesus Campos? Why is his story so varied? First he was a hero who stopped the shooting, then he was shot before it even happened and never reported it, now he was shot just after he started shooting out the windows. None of these stories fit with the other supposed facts.
This latest story has Campos calling in "shots fired" on his radio just as the shooting started, meaning he knew where the shooter was, so why was there so much confusion as to where the shooter was? Seems like they should have known right away.
    Where is Jesus Campos?
How could they be so confused on his timeline? They can just look at the elevator CCTV footage to see when he went up. They could have asked Campos himself what happened. Does he not know? Did he change his story that much?
    Where is the CCTV footage?
    Where is Jesus Campos?

You know why legislation doesn't work?
Because the people proposing them have no idea how firearms function and are more interested in banning cosmetic features than actually attacking causes of crime.

    Arguments for gun ownership:
The 2nd amendment: The constitution was written in different times and was written by mortals. We don't have to hold on to out-dated laws past their use by dates. We can change them.
Self-defense: Your right to own guns is a insane person's right to own guns. It is a terrorist's right to own guns. It is mass-murderer's right to own guns and it is a gangster's right to own guns. Individuals are not safer by allowing a preponderance of guns in society.
I use guns for recreation: Guns are not toys. They are weapons designed for killing things. Do something else.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people: This line of logic allows anything. Grenades, nuclear weapons, RPGs. There is clearly a (somewhat subjective) line to be drawn, and that line should be items that are designed to inflict murder or serious injury.

Any more arguments for gun ownership that need refutations?

This as a good video, Matt. Something that I have never heard from anyone defending gun rights from USA is why Japan didn't invade the USA during WWII. I have friends in Japan and they say that one of the reasons was that it was commonly thought that every American owned a gun (like a John Wayne movie 🙂 ), who want's to invade a country like that?

Been waiting since May 18, 2016, yes 2016, for the tax stamp on my .22 caliber suppressor. The ATF of course cashed the check within a week. But I am still waiting. And, BTW I am Retired Military.

An "assault weapon" is an ordinary semi-automatic firearm that the media and second amendment opponents want to make seem more dangerous than it is. So I guess a "semi-assault weapon" would be a semi-automatic firearm that they sometimes claim is an excessively deadly military weapon of mass destruction and at other times include in the weapons they consider acceptable for private citizens to own (for now).

This is where I think Republicans/Conservatives have the winning argument: Waiting for tempers to cool and heads to become level DOES result in more sensible and rational policy- and law-making than making these decisions in the immediate aftermath of emotionally charged events. For example, Jack Nicholson's character in the movie "The Shining" when he calmly booked the rooms for his hotel stay (Conservative) vs. his "Here's Johnny!" moment later in the film (Liberal/Democrat). Two slightly different states of mind.

On principle I agree with your stance on "not the time to talk about it", I do however believe it's classless to push agendas 4 hours after the incident as Hilary Clinton did. Wrong? NO, tactless? Absolutely. Blatant attempt to seize on peoples emotions to quickly push something through that removes peoples rights. Modifications to our most basic amendments must only be done in the least emotional and most logical way possible in my opinion.

The 2nd amendment is a GOD GIVEN RIGHT and cannot be taken away, ever. It isn't a gift from the "govt" that allows me to purchase and carry a weapon. The "gift" was that WE THE PEOPLE allowed these criminals pretending to represent us the power to rule over us. Its time to renege on that gift. These traitor collectivist Communists of the ctrl-left have chipped away at the 27 words of our 2nd amendment for so long it isn't recognizable.

These ctrl-leftwits may not be able to entirely outlaw guns but they will outlaw ammunition, eventually. Commifornia already requires a background check to buy .22 bullets.

I don't want to fucking talk about it anymore. Its past time to FIGHT about it.

Matt, I appreciate the effort you put in to providing clear, factual information AND your opinion without letting your opinion corrupt the facts. There are a handful of people I view that do that and if more "news" and media people stuck to that principle we would be solving problems with thought-provoking debates instead of creating more with emotionally-charged arguments. Thanks.

Excellent video Matt. As a former defense industry person, I too am torn between bump stocks, forearm stocks on quasi SBRs and just how effective legislation would be. I certainly can say they would be more "common sense " than flash suppressor's and bayonet lugs. But all of these still take me to the thought that someone that is going to commit a crime isn't going to be following laws.

It is never the time to have a discussion about gun control because there is never a time when the side that is for gun control is making its argument in good faith and from a position of knowledge or substance. People on the left don't just not understand guns, they boast about not understanding guns and they ostracize those who are a little too close to understanding guns. There can't be a reasonable debate with someone like that. So it will not ever be the time for a discussion about gun control until its proponents can grow up.

Matt, please study the leaked pics of the Vegas shooter. Pics show guns with 30 round mags, tripods, scopes, & bump stocks, right? But have you ever handled a gun with those features? Okay, if not, have you at least ever watched videos of gun pros utilizing those features? Basically, no one, not even a gun pro can "bump fire" a gun while attempting to "scope" a target, especially on a tripod! One must hold the gun with arm pressure, that even gun pros arms fatigue after only one 30 round mag or two. However we all heard 100+ volleys btwn each firing, for a total of approx 3000 shots! (Pics didn't show anywhere near that) But 30 rnd mags? Now, add in the fact they also found a note with calculations of distance, height, bullet speed, etc, info a sniper would use. Now I'm not doubting automatic weapons were used, we all heard rapid fire. I'm doubting it was bump stocks that were used to kill people. The concert was 1100 feet away. I highly doubt a fun toy like a rapid fire simulation could get those bullets down range. I could be wrong, but as a gun guy myself, I'm not seeing it. Wonder what you think?

Ime, The easiest way to explain the legality of owning full auto firearms is they were made illegal in 1986 however those made before the ban were grandfathered in for those who owned them and are the ONLY ones that may still be transferred therefore are unreasonably expensive due to manipulated supply and demand. Like, $20k and 12 month atf approval wait unreasonable.

One side says in the nature of, "U.S. citizens cannot be trusted with an effective murdering tool." Others say, "Gun prohibition enables opportunities criminals can act on like black market trade and individual robbery with less risk."  Either way, only time will tell what the effects of both actions will be. Do we hear of any crime prevention by civilians with a gun? I'd welcome opinions.
