‘Flying tank’: IL-2 legendary WW2 plane resurrected from lake takes flight at MAKS 2017 Air Show

The famous Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik has taken to the skies over Zhukovsky airdrome at the MAKS-2017 Air Show, marking a glorious return for the WWII-era aircraft. The plane had been lying at the bottom of a lake for 70 years after it was shot down during the war.

  • wouter kellerman says:

some very stupid comments by less informed/stupid/idiotic people. first of all cudos to who restored back to flying condition. second: this was one very tough aircraft to shoot down. third: it was greatly feared by German ground forces. fourth: it was not a fighter but a low-level ground attack aircraft. fifth: it was very hard to shoot down regardless of ground fire or by enemy fighters. it didn't become a legend for nothing. first go read about it before revealing your ignorance.

  • 4nuk8r says:

I am an old american. My redneck hillbilly parents were proud of their new 1959 Encyclopedia Britannica set.
They were good parents who urged me to read them.
Before I could read at age 4 I liked to look at the pictures of famous combat aircraft.
Believe it or not the IL-2 Sturmovik was listed there as the most famous combat plane in the world, in '59 (biggest picture – in color)
Now I am old but I can't believe only 2 still fly.
Anyway – Good Job Russia !

NIGGER PLEASE!! RUSSIANS ARE WEAK!! THIS AIR DISPLAY IS OBVIOUS OVERCOMPENSATION FOR THEIR UNWILLINGNESS TO STAND UP TO THE USA IN SYRIA!!

  • Ming Chan says:

Haha how Russian Biased media doesn't even check the facts of their history. This thing was no fighter but an ground attacker and was thought of as a tank due to its ability to soak up 7.92mm rifle caliber bullets from the ground. The real flying tank nowadays is the A-10 that can take 23mm cannon rounds.
