Chennai oil spill: Coast guard giving full support so marine life is not lost, says Coast Guard IG



Coast guard officials say most of the sludge has to be removed manually. The process of removal is underway. Oil spill in 5 different places in Chennai. TNPCB Council apprises NGT about the oil spill. Bio-remediation of oil spill facilitated.

The oil spill is a massive ecological disaster, with the latest figures estimating that 20 tonnes of oil leaked due to the collision of the two ships of the coast of Ennore close to Chennai. The sludge has spread close to 34 kms of coastline affecting Marina, Besant Nagar and Thirunmiyur. A total of 60 tonne of mixture and sediments has been cleared, it is estimated a close to 20 tonnes of sludge still remains which may take 2-3 days before it is cleared. The opposition has called for a probe claiming the response has been delayed and ineffective.
