Imagine giving your all to the country you love, and then you decide to leave the military and pursue a career outside the armed forces.

“I was putting my resumé out everywhere on the internet going to businesses… no luck. No one was really looking for my qualifications.”

This is the sad situation of many army veterans when searching for a job. Hiring Our Heroes is a program that uses today’s technology to help find work for army veterans. The group, part of a U.S. Chamber of Commerce initiative, partnered with Verizon and Frog Design to create an app that translates military work experience into civilian resumes.

The app is called The Personal Branding Resume Engine, and we think it’s about one of the most innovative things we’ve seen. Not only did some major names collaborate in the startup spirit, but they’re doing true good for our fighting men and women.

The story here is told through the eyes of Cassandra Cook, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, now working with Verizon. This is our first attempt at a bit of longer-format journalism, so unlike our two-minute vignettes and special segments it runs longer. But the human and technologically innovative elements of this story were too complex for just a scant 120 seconds.
